Cross Country Moving

The only thing worse than a normal move a few towns over is a long distance move. Not only do you have to worry about packing and taking care of all the house stuff, but you also have to worry about a several hour long trip. You also have to plan and figure out your new home which could be hundreds of miles away. Here are some tips to lessen the stress that comes with moving several states over or even across the entire country.

Your New Home

Find out everything you can about your new community. Are there certain rules you need to know about? Sometimes certain streets have restrictions about the size and weight of trucks that can pass through. Finding out ahead of time can save a lot of time. The moving company can use smaller trucks right off the bat rather than trying to figure out how to move your stuff without driving on the street. If you can, fly or drive over before you move so you can set everything up. If you have children, you’ll want to know where the school is and where the bus stops at. Get the phone line and internet set up. Know where the local grocery stores and restaurants are because cooking might be hard the first few days.

The Neighborhood

Know the important things about the neighborhood before you move. If you have children, where are the schools? Are there any attractions nearby? Where is the newest train station? If you know these things before you move, you’ll be less likely to get lost in your new town. It’ll take away the stress of scrambling around, trying to figure out everything in the one day you have left of the weekend before it’s your first day of work or your child’s first day of school.

Packing & Labeling

Packing and labeling are one of the most important aspects of moving if you want to decrease stress. Label the boxes by room and items. It makes loading and unloading them much easier. The movers don’t have to worry about which boxes certain fine china and which ones can be stacked on top of one another. It also make unpacking a lot easier for you.

Storage

Consider getting a storage unit for the things you can’t move, but don’t want to throw out. You’re items will be kept safe while you are half way across the country. Later, if you want your things back or have decided you won’t be moving back to your original state, you can always have your things transported to your new home or a storage facility closer to you.
